Make some extra cash – Officiate

Make some extra cash – Officiate

Several years ago, I decided I needed a diversion from the wintertime darkness, the fact that this diversion offered compensation in exchange for my time sounded wonderful.  I spent the winter months officiating young student athletes competing on the basketball hardwood. These students were looking to develop character and leadership through the avenue of athletics. They would learn to thrive under pressure, making split second decisions, while also exercising their bodies.  Happily, I could be a small part of their success by guiding their understanding of the rules of the…

Need Money, ask Uncle Sam! Everyone’s favorite uncle.

Need Money, ask Uncle Sam! Everyone’s favorite uncle.

I love to read the newspaper.  Each morning, Sam (my son) and I walk barefoot out to the curb and bring it in.  For awhile, I got it and he watched, then he got it and I watched.  One day it slipped out of the bag; since that time he has requested help, so now I grab one end and he grabs the other. If the newspaper’s weight was measured in knowledge, this shared workload would be necessary, but in reality we just look odd, rather I look odd, he…

My 2 year old needs a job; College is only 16 years away!

My 2 year old needs a job; College is only 16 years away!

As I’ve mentioned, I love reading the newspaper.  Lately, I’ve found myself paying particular attention to the classified sections. I’ve been looking to see if any farmers need help, specifically with driving tractors, looking for cows, horsey’s, or picking red tomatoes.  I’ve also been checking into the construction business with a particular interest in driving dumpers, diggers, and steam rollers. I’m gainfully employed, but my son, you see, is not.  He’s 2 ½ which means he’s a little late getting a job, that is if he wants to pay for…

How do you get to work? Options other than by car.

How do you get to work? Options other than by car.

Some days, I exercise for two hours, yet it only costs me an hour of my day.  As a lover of exercise, this ratio suits me just fine.  I accomplish this feet by combining exercise with my daily commute.  Allow me to explain; my car commute averages around 30 minutes each way depending on traffic.  Traffic, by the way, is something you never want to depend on.  My wife and I work, but in towns that are not in proximity to each other.  Wisely, we thought, let’s get a house…

Dressing your children – Thoughts from a color blind Dad.

Dressing your children – Thoughts from a color blind Dad.

Putting on clothing is hard.  Not the actual act of placing each leg into the pant hole one at a time, I’ve got that mostly mastered, but rather the act of putting on clothing that looks good with the other clothing I’ve decided to wear simultaneously. Clothing is a nightmare, when you add in the fact that I’m color blind, dressing to impress becomes a Sisyphean task. I’ve mostly learned to manage this challenge by only wearing blue jeans, or black pants / shorts, ensuring that I can wear nearly…

Paint the baby’s room!

Paint the baby’s room!

Brushes, drop clothes, step stool, rags, paint.  When a baby is on the way, rooms need to be painted.  I believe this is taught in parenting class right after they tell you that you may never sleep again.  Upon hearing this all hopeful parents think, “Why not stay up at all hours and paint the kids room, it will double as sleep deprivation training.  This line of thinking, found me standing in an empty room, looking at the walls.  Briefly, I considered hiring a painter, but then I remembered I…

Build your own patio

Build your own patio

Last summer I dug a hole.  It wasn’t especially deep, only about 6-8 inches, but it was substantial in size, about eleven feet across.  I dug this hole into the side of a small hill in our backyard, and I mounded all the dirt upon the top of this hill making it rather large.  I had all the digging done by the end of last August, at which point I took a break; for the next 10 months. The hole remained, changing very little.  Sometimes it was filled with water,…

Fitness or Finance – Make the Decisions Automatic

Fitness or Finance – Make the Decisions Automatic

Being physically fit is hard work, I know because I have eyes.  If it were easy I’d see lots more fit people, but sadly, most of us appear in various stages of dilapidation.  If people were houses, most would be labeled as handyman specials. As the father of a two sons ages 2 and 11 days, I’m currently struggling to get my workouts completed.  The older one can’t always be talked into stroller rides while I run, and the little one is to small.  Just this morning, I had grand…

$5,500 for Sawdust?

$5,500 for Sawdust?

Everyone loves having a backyard with a deck or patio, meat is on the grill and a beer is in your hands.  I’m pretty sure this image is stamped in detail on the exterior of the Statue of Liberty. My backyard fits this picture perfectly; we even have an enormous shade tree.  A beautiful oak, 4 foot diameter trunk, and a spread of around 100 feet, this tree doesn’t so much shade the backyard, as envelope it.  My wife was a bit skittish of the tree during storms, but I…

$509 Per Month for a New Car!

$509 Per Month for a New Car!

A few months ago, my wife was pregnant.  Eight days ago the baby was born, a boy, currently he eats, sleeps and poops, and he’s perfect.  Anyway, when my wife is pregnant, which she was a few months ago, she crashes the car.  It’s not her fault; people hit her, mainly just because pregnancy isn’t lively enough on its own.  She is two for two with pregnancy and crashes. So it was with knowing trepidation, that I answered my phone shortly after she left for work on a Saturday morning…
